Kiera's Grand Day Out

So for the past 18 months we have known this day would come, but somehow it was very long in coming. A series of mishaps and whatknots schemed to delay it as long as possible...OK, really it was just me dragging my feet on getting it going, but the tear duct surgery Kiera has needed since birth took place today. We started our grand day out by dropping the big girls at Annie's house at 7:25 a.m. Rise and shine! Then Clay, Kiera and I drove over to Oakland Children's Hospital. We got checked in at the main desk and then they sent us up to the Pre-Op Nurse. She politely confirmed that Kiera was having surgery with Dr. So-and-so to have a tumor removed on her left side. YIKES!

We got everything cleared up, and no, they did not remove any such tumor from our darling little Kiera. They did, however, give her some sweet drugs that made her think she was seeing a castle (please see tripped-out face below). Then the doctor performed a tight "bilateral nasolacrimal probing".

When the surgery was done they paged us to come to the post-op recovery room. When we rounded the corner toward recovery we could hear our little Kiera already. Over the next thirty minutes she cried. and cried. and kicked. and screamed. and writhed. and arched. and twisted. and launched. and was belligerent. and was cantankerous. and was grumpy. and was sad. and was combative. and tried to yank out the iv tube. several times. and once with her foot. Needless to say, the four of us (Kiera, mom, dad and nice nurse) were pretty sweaty when the nurse decided it was time for the backup. IV sedative backup. 10 minutes later she looked like this.

Please note: Thumb in mouth. Eyes closed. Quiet. but still Sweaty.

After a 15 minute catnap, she woke up and was quite pleasant, and mildly curious about her IV arm. Then we went home. Let the tear ducts flow.

thank you for not mentioning the fact that i was asleep when clay dropped off the girls!
oh kiera! what a traumatic day! love the picture with her curled up with her thumb in her mouth. (wish we had some legal drugs at home to get through a tantrum.)
we love you kiera! you're very brave!

all i can say is .... wow. and i agree with ms. annie up top.. drugs like that would certainly come in handy at home! (so glad she didn't have a tumor! scary that the mistake got even that far!)

I'm glad everything went well. William had surgery at 1 year(I'll tell you why later...) and it was tramatic!! She looks like a trooper!

O Britt that was such a cool story. How ever always hard to have a little one have to go through such an ordeal. But you know how to make almost anything funny....I miss that so much, just laughing at almost nothing because of the way you tell the story..especially the "tailored pant suit" story. I still get a hardy chuckle thinking of that story. Speaking of, do you know if that dream has come true for yet or not? Good times, Meg
